Well I am not good at mathematics but many of friends are masters of mathematics. The thing I have realized about them is that almost all of them wear headphones while practicing. Music helps them to create a pleasant environment. Music stops everything which create disturbance. If you use your working memory with full focus then you can remember many things. Mathematicians use working memory technique to understand their problems.

Lets talk about the reasons about this topic why Mathematicians wear Headphones while Practicing. Your working memory is full of everything which you see,listen and watch around you such as dog sniffing around you, your doctor’s appointment, play time etc. So there many simultaneous distractions to block your flow state of mind. According to psychology, If a person is knocked out of a flow state of mind then it can take almost 20 minutes to get back. If you lost your concentration, it can create a negative impact on your work.
That’s why mathematicians wear headphones while practicing, to knock out the distraction and make sure their flow of mind. On other hand, use of headphones is minor among senior mathematicians because their level of understanding is higher. Their higher level of understanding is due to their spatial long term memory which makes them to recall all memories without losing flow.
So the conclusion is that mathematicians are easily distracted, headphones eliminate distractions.
